How to remove ‘IDM has been registered with the fake serial number ’ error?

Almost everyone is aware about ‘Internet Download Manager’ (IDM). You might have been using this application since it helps you to download files from web at high speed. I would say, this is from one of the best tool to be used to download files from internet. But you may have been facing the pop up that ‘IDM has been registered with the Fake serial number ’.

This pop up is really very irritating since it appears every time when you are about to download some file or when you start your system.  This error leads you to search for cracked file from torrent and other alternative.

Here in this article I am going to reveal 2 simple and easy steps to get rid of this pop up without using any torrent file or without using any fake serial key.

Let’s start with the methods to resolve problem of IDM which shows ‘IDM has been registered with the fake serial number ’.

Before proceeding use Revo Uninstaller to remove previously installed IDM completely.

Method 1: Tweaking with IDM files.

#1. Open window explorer and navigate to ‘Internet Download Manager’ folder in program files.

      Open ‘Internet Download Manager’ folder to see the list of files as shown below:

 copy-idmBroker-exe-file-and-delete-IDMGrHlp-exe-to-resolve-IDM-has-been-registered-with-fake-serail-number-pop-up

#2. In open window, search and delete ‘IDMGrHlp.exe’ file. And copy ‘idmBroker.exe’ from same folder and paste it in same folder.

#3. Once you done with Step #2. Now rename the copied file of ‘idmBroker.exe’ to ‘IDMGrHlp.exe’ as shown below:

#4. Now last step is to restart your system to apply this effect and enjoy the downloading without any interruption.

Worth reading: Remove unwanted files and boost performance of the system.

Method 2: Play with Hosts File

#1. Open window explorer and navigate to folder > ‘C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\’.

This folder contains 5 files out of which one is ‘hosts’ file.

#2. Right click on that file follow by Open With >> Notepad.

#3. Once you have opened this file in Notepad. In my case I am using ‘Notepadd++’ it doesn’t make any difference.

Worth Reading: Recover your deleted files from SD card or HDD for free.

Now just copy the below lines of code and paste it after the last line in the ‘hosts’ file.

127.0.0.1           tonec.com
127.0.0.1           www.tonec.com
127.0.0.1           registeridm.com
127.0.0.1           www.registeridm.com
127.0.0.1           secure.registeridm.com
127.0.0.1           internetdownloadmanager.com

127.0.0.1           mirror2.internetdownloadmanager.com

Your code looks like this:

 paste-the-sample-code-in-host-txt-file-located-in-internet-download-manager-to-resolve-IDM-has-been-registered-with-fake-serail-number-pop-up

#4. Now just restart your system to see the effect. Enjoy downloading without any interruption.

Note: If you cannot edit host file then use this trick to edit host file which has Read-only property.

These 2 tricks will allow you to use IDM without even registering IDM on internet.

P.S. Any software which has been developed by developers requires lots of skill and expertise to develop it. So to show some credibility towards the developer, you should try to use original key. 😉

    What version of IDM is this referring to? I have uninstalled IDM (trial version, no fake serial number) using Revo uninstaller, then installed idman623build12 and tried both the above methods but it still prompts me “IDM has expired…”.

  • My problem is solved boss…….but when i download any video from you tube,the videos are downloading in .mkv format and i am unable to open those vedios from vlc player…….it is giving only audio but vedio…..plz tell me the solution?……..this is my first question in blogs……….

    “please check if this file is opened in another program”. I cant save the host file. please help me..

  • its working…. ‘note’ if you can’t save the edited host file directly in the “etc” folder, first save it somewhere (e.g my document) then move it to the ”C>windows>system32>drivers>etc” folder (or system64). thanks

    Firstly: You said once I done one of your above methods, then I msut stop checking for new updates for IDM. I originally hadn’t been facing a problem with IDM has been registered with a fake serial number. However, once I had to check to new upates of IDM since I had been encountring a problem with out-of-date IDM Integration in FireFox. So, I have become faced with ‘IDM has been registered with a fake serial number’ error since then

    I realized that when I added, and saved to hosts file, then ‘www.internetdownloadmanager.com/’ no longer opens. However, after I have deleted them, and save hosts file as it was, then it came back opening well. So, did this happen for editing hosts file, and this will only affect opening ‘en ‘www.internetdownloadmanager.com/’

      Use Revo uninstaller to untinstall IDM with fake serial key completely then use the above mentioned trick to install IDM again.

      Use below link to check how to remove any application completely from the system.

      If problem persist then try to download another version of IDM and use above trick. It seems something is wrong with your end. Try with new vrersion.
      And above code just by pass the auto update check and registration from backend file.

        What about using this way.

        Today we are going to learn how register Internet Download Manager without any crack and by this way no “fake serial number” message will appear ….
        Just Follow these steps :
        1 – Go to : http://www.internetdownloadmanager.com/download.html
        and download the latest version of IDM from there .
        2 – After downloading , run idman***.exe from where you have downloaded to .
        3 – After installation ,it will ask you to register the program , ignore it and just exit .
        4 – Press (Windows+R) , run interface will appear , enter “drivers” and then press “OK” and then go to “etc” folder .
        (an alternative to step 4 :
        Go directly to : C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc )
        5 – a file called “hosts” will be found there , open this file using Notepad or any text editor you like ….
        6 – Copy these information without the quotation symbols to the end of content of that file :

          Applying till step 4 mention by you also do the job. I have applied step from 1 to 4 and it is working for me. Still if you are facing issues and using serial key does the job then its great.

  • Thanks a lot, for your reply. I think your both setps (editing ‘hosts file’, and Tweaking with IDM files’ only mentioned in your two steps are only to how to bypass the auto update check and registration from backend file.
    However, you didn’t gave any serial key to register the IDM at all.
    I think that registration needs a key as in my seven step in my way mentioned.

    Moreover, the registration of IDM with all steps I found in the Internet is temporary, and not permanent (pop-up of ‘IDM has been registered with a fake serial number’ showed up again whenever I started my computer. I need a permanent registration(forever). Could you please let this problem finish forever.

      Yes this step by pass the auto check for update by the system. For some it is working fine but for some it is not since after restarting system it again update. After restarting system when if pop for update and you click on ‘Yes” button then you will start getting pop up of ‘Fake serial key’. So I would suggest don’t click on ‘Yes’ button when it pop up for update check.

        I have tried your two steps, but my IDM wasn’t registered at all. How do you think that an IDM would be working without registering it. Or otherwise if it is a free trail version.

        Let me give you the mechanism I did:
        1- I use Revo Uninstaller Pro to completely remove the exiting IDM which whenever I start my Notebook, then pop-up of ‘IDM has been registered with a fake serial number’
        2- I restarted my computer, and then I installed a new fresh installation of idman 6.25 build 3 which is trail version and needs to be registered. Or otherwise, it will be expired after a specific period.
        3- Since I don’t have any serial number. So, I proceeded with your steps.
        4- I have edit hosts file to be shown as follows:

        5- However, till the four step doesn’t mean that my IDM is registered. However, it is just to bypass the auto check for update by the system. Since when we want to register IDM, we must enter any registration information(such as, Name, E-mail, serial number).
        6- So, Your steps needs to be completed, I think.

          You step for including serial key in order to complete above step is a good idea. Since above steps is not working for many of users.

          But again it won’t work if I will give serial key because serial key may not be accepted by every IDM users since every user may not use same version of IDM.

  • In the IDM 6.18.11.2 version I use, I have an even bigger problem. I have to register with one of the serial keys every single time I log in. I have run as Administrator and have done the troubleshooting compatibility. In spite of this, the problem continues. In addition to this, the fake serial pop up is always there. I use windows 8.1 with Internet Explorer. What could be the reason for this problem? Please suggest a solution. Thanks in advance.

    When I copied your given code into my “host” file, the “ESET smart security” { (Activated & updated) Installed on my PC)} marked it as a “TROJAN” and cleaned it by deleting!!!!!!!

    I hope this is going to work on mine. Mind pop up every two minutes. Its really disturbing me.

    Also, for babu Kumar, the same thing I have been faced with.

    Shivkumar, even didn’t tell us how an IDM version would be registered with either of his steps without using SN to be typed in the field of SN in IDM regsitration Windows showing whenever start the IDM.
    He only mentioned in his two steps to how to bypass the auto update check and registration from backend file.
    However, he didn’t gave any serial to register the IDM at all.
    All what Shivkumar told us in his article is: how to let IDM bypass the auto check for update by the system. Since when we want to register IDM, we must enter any registration information(such as, Name, E-mail, serial number). So, Shivjumar’s steps need to be completed, I think.

    I, myself, think that registering IDM with either way is futile. Or otherwise, there is IDM-authorized SN, or a tricking way which can registering the IDM forever without getting SN.

    I have found another way whose details are below: (But it has still been not forever)

    1- Go to : http://www.internetdownloadmanager.com/download.html
    and download the latest version of IDM from there.
    2- Now open IDM and register your program with your name and email and enter one of these serial numbers:

      In your previous comment, you have mention to complete this post by adding serial key, but according to me key may or may not be applicable to all version of IDM for giving serial key to complete the post is not worth. But I am really thankful to you for adding this information for other user who may get help with this serial key.

      It seems you are using unregistered version of window. Its okay you can use it without registering.

      Still if you want to remove this notification then you can search for register window 7 using crack file.

  • None of your methods worked and I did the Uninstall as well, in fact I have used more than one method from various sites to no avail nothing has worked to date. To this point I have just put up with the nag since the program still works as usual other than the nag screen pop-up. If you can figure another method out I would be willing to try but for now NOTHING works!

    I have the same problem with @Mohammad Lardhi, after I completed all the instructions as listed with Mohammad Lardhi, I will get the same error message ” the fake serial pop up” is always there.

    Is there a permanent Fix to this error message?

  • Bro.. good share.. Recently I downloaded IDM 6.25 (latest) and i found some serial no:s online.. I put one of them and got registered.. The next day, I saw ‘fake serial no:’ pop up every 2mins..

    I then tried your 1st method and it really worked.. But I dint use the revo-uninstaller.. But still I was succeeded.. I’m using windows 10..

    I think Revo is not mandatory for the procedure..

  • I have window xp -2 I have installed idm and turn off my network put the fake key and registered now it is working but after when restart the system with network giving error please help me I have uninstall and again installed it but problem remains same. Please help me i need this software.

    now just copy and paste that hosts file into the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc folders and replace the original.

  • Used method 1 but the Browser integration breaks up while using method 1. I mean sometimes IDM successfully grabs the files whereas sometimes it fails to do so. Even force grab-download with IDM fails sometimes.

    Another problem is that while opening IDM, only the icon appears in the notification bar. You can do nothing with it. You have to run another instance of IDM to fix this problem.

    Anyway, do you have a good solution to the problem?

  • I cant paste the needed file even though the file was a not read only but the original document. It told me that the original document cant be edited

  • The first method did work but now, instead of that annoying ‘fake serial number…’ it becomes ‘counterfeit serial number…’

    for IDM, but now when I am downloading, the window of IDM is not coming and saying the site not reachable.

    How can i get the IDM for lifelong?

    It was once downlaoded for 30 days and again downlaoded after removing from control panel and showign already registered and etc.

    After that I deleted that new IDM form control panel and followed your steps
    Method 2: Play with Hosts File
    Now unable to go to IMD site not reachable.

    If you can guide, will be highly obliging

    • Hi Ranjan,

      Use Revo uninstaller to uninstall IDM with fake serial key completely then use the above mentioned trick to install IDM again.

      Use below link to check how to remove any application completely from the system.

      If problem persist then try to download another version of IDM and use above trick. It seems something is wrong with your end. Try with new vrersion.
      And above code just by pass the auto update check and registration from backend file.

        I have done the needful of by removing by revo.

        But i have the notepad written/ copy-pasted the previous lines as you told.

        Do I require to delete those lines ?

        as from
        127.0.0.1 tonec.com
        to

        127.0.0.1 mirror3.internetdownloadmanager.com and then start again downloading the IDM?

        If now i choose 1st method, will be able to download the lifetime version? as IMD residuals removed from the system.

        • Hi Ranjan,

          Use either or one method at a time. If you have uninstall IDM using revo, just clear temp and cache of your machine and trying downloading using step 1.

          However if you still face issue then use below steps:

          Download Manager without any crack and by this way no “fake serial number” message will appear ….
          Just Follow these steps :
          1 – Go to : http://www.internetdownloadmanager.com/download.html
          and download the latest version of IDM from there .
          2 – After downloading , run idman***.exe from where you have downloaded to .
          3 – After installation ,it will ask you to register the program , ignore it and just exit .
          4 – Press (Windows+R) , run interface will appear , enter “drivers” and then press “OK” and then go to “etc” folder .
          (an alternative to step 4 :
          Go directly to : C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc )
          5 – a file called “hosts” will be found there , open this file using Notepad or any text editor you like ….
          6 – Copy these information without the quotation symbols to the end of content of that file :
          ”

          127.0.0.1 http://www.tonec.com
          127.0.0.1 registeridm.com
          127.0.0.1 http://www.registeridm.com

  • It’s probably worth mentioning that if you are going to edit the host file, make sure you change the file permissions to read-only otherwise IDM re-edits the host file and comments these hacks out. By making it read-only IDM is unable to undo the changes you make to the hosts file.

  • Both of these methods have been circumvented with the new release of Internet Download Manager – Version: 6.30 Build 5(Jan/10/2018) Full.

    As soon as IDM starts, it put a # in front of most of its servers in the host file.
    I have changed the permissions on the host file to read only and it still gets edited by IDM.

    and the copy idmBroker.exe to IDMGrHlp.exe does not get around the block anymore.

    What we need is to discover what in the registry is blocking the serial

  • If I use Revo Uninstaller to completely remove IDM. How am I suppose to use any of the methods? My IDM program along with the program files are deleted…
